With its diverse wilderness and abundant national parks, Tropical North Queensland is home to many breathtaking mountain biking tracks. It’s important to always follow the advice from Queensland Parks and never venture into dangerous areas to prevent serious injury or death. Check trail conditions for the Smithfield MTB Park, Atherton Forest MTB Park and for all other trails visit Trailforks.

Tropical North Queensland’s mountain biking map is dotted with tantalising possibilities but if you’re craving variety you can’t beat the Atherton Tablelands.

Here on this cool plateau inland of Cairns you can bliss out on awe-inspiring single-track, embark on epic dirt-road explorations or just drink in its geography, culture and attractions at a laid-back pace.

Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park, located just outside of the charming rural centre of Atherton, is the region’s mountain biking jewel. This vast and varied single-track network has white-knuckle trails to thrill hardcore mountain biking connoisseurs, as well as a range of less technical but no-less-enjoyable trails for more intermediate riders.

The region’s fire trails and dirt roads – many of them featuring in the famous Crocodile Trophy mountain bike race – offer a huge array of potential riding itineraries for the intrepid mountain bike adventurer, from mild to wild.

On family-friendly trails such as the Atherton Tablelands Rail Trail, the region’s two-wheeled delights can be experienced by riders of all abilities and ages.

With plenty to tempt you off the bike – from spectacular rainforest and outback scenery, picturesque lakes and waterfalls to amazing wildlife, produce and unique attractions – you’ll want to check into some accommodation and stay a while.
