Bamaga, Australia’s northernmost settlement on the mainland, is the start line for the third-ever marathon in the Northern Peninsula Regional Council Area. The tiny yet vibrant township hosts the race to Australia’s most northern tip, starting with a briefing and welcoming party the night. This year, a 7km Fun Run is new to the program.
Commencing at dawn on the outskirts of the quiet little town, a traditional Welcome to Country ceremony will herald the start of the race. Competitors will follow the current 4WD track all the way to the rocky outcrop, and race back to Bamaga before the humidity kicks in.
Both 42.2km and 21.1km events will start on the junction of Pajinka Back Road and Pajinka Road at 6am.
42km Marathon Route –
Participants will run from just outside Bamaga Airport in a northwesterly direction along Airport Road for approximately 10km. Competitors will u-turn at the Bamaga Police Station, then run the entire stretch of Pajnka Road, finishing on the beach adjacent to the most Northern Point of Australia, thus completing their 42.2km marathon.
21km Half Marathon Route –
Participants will run from onto the existing 4WD track in a north-easterly direction, continue along Pajinka Road for 21km, where they will cross the finish line in the walking trails carpark. Competitors can take the walking track from the walking trail car park, and have their photo taken at the Northern Most Point of Australia.
Registrations are currently open for all three events. The event provides full support for all runners and support and pacing runners, including support and refreshment stations, and full access to medical specialists.
