Events to catch in September 2021

Check out this events guide to catch festival upon festival, discover out-of-this-world parties, cheer on your favourite athletes and connect with Indigenous culture through celebrations of song, dance and tradition.

Cairns Amateurs Carnival

Get ready to experience Cairns at its finest, with three days of fun, fashion, food and entertainment at one of the most anticipated social and sporting events in the region.

It’s not just about horse racing at the Cairns Amateurs Carnival. With its reputation for fashionable fun with a tropical twist, great racing and spectacular atmosphere, this is the pinnacle of the north’s social calendar. 

When: 9-11 September 2021

The Great Pyramid Race

Athletes will once again try their luck at conquering one of Tropical North Queensland’s toughest hikes in this year’s Great Pyramid Race. Drawing thousands of spectators each year, this race is one of the largest and most vibrant events in the region. 

Along with the major race events, there are a number of other sporting activities to participate in, including a 6.2km Race to the Base, 1800m Juniors Race and Charity Fun Run. This year there is an additional 3km race for those getting into running, or for the youngsters who are up for a challenge.

There will also be some health and fitness stalls and a few activities to keep kids and families entertained during the events.

Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival

The Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival showcases the rich Torres Strait diversity of culture over four spectacular days on Thursday Island.

Visitors are treated to cultural dances, boat races, forums and even a reconstructed traditional village to form what is known as one of Australia’s most incredible Indigenous cultural festivals.

TARGA Great Barrier Reef

TARGA Great Barrier Reef brings all the energy and excitement of the world’s ultimate tarmac rally to right here in Tropical North Queensland.

Featuring a series of both competitive and non-competitive touring events, TARGA will see drivers zoom through some of the most scenic landscapes in Cairns, through the Atherton Tablelands and into the Cassowary Coast. 

When: 3-5 September 2021

RocKwiz Live

RocKwiz are bringing their unique blend of kwiz, comedy and live music to the tropics this month, so get your friends together, pack a picnic, grab a drink from the bar and sit back for a night of entertainment with your hosts Julia Zemiro and Brian Nankervis. 

There will also be special guest features, Dugald the roadie and the RocKwiz Orkestra to light up the festival night at Munro Martin Parklands.

7 Cairns Marathon

Thousands of athletes from around the country are expected to participate in this year’s 7 Cairns Marathon. 

Event distances include the marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km and the 2km, taking place along the scenic Cairns Esplanade. With on-course and post-race entertainment in Fogarty Park, this is one event not to be missed. 

This community-focused event caters to everyone from those who want to test their limits to  those who simply want to cheer on their friends.

Wallaby Creek Festival

Celebrate three days of art and music at the Wallaby Creek Festival. Camp out at this wonderful, family-focused event and discover a side of the tropics you never knew existed.

The event program offers original acts on three stages, with something to suit every taste from performance to food stalls, children’s activities and healing spaces. Not to mention safe swimming spots in the nearby rivers. 

When: 24-26 September 2021

Cardiac Challenge

Every year, hundreds of cyclists are drawn to the city of Cairns to saddle up for the Cardiac Challenge and conquer the epic journey from Cairns to Cooktown.

Featuring some of the most stunning scenery in the region, this incredible three day event aims to raise money for the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation to buy specialised equipment for improved cardiac care services across Tropical North Queensland.
