Want to experience all the action that Tropical North Queensland has to offer? Mark your calendar with these great events in August.

Check out this events guide to catch festival upon festival, discover out-of-this-world parties, cheer on your favourite athletes and connect with Indigenous culture through celebrations of song, dance and tradition.

Cardwell UFO Festival

The Cardwell UFO Festival highlights the extra-terrestrial activities around Cardwell. This annual event begins on Friday night with the UFO spotting tour, and continues with a weekend filled with family fun activities, markets and show rides.

When: August 6-8, 2021

The Great Pyramid Race

The Pyramid Race has drawn thousands of spectators in past years, making it one of the largest and most vibrant events in the region.

Along with the major race events, there are a number of other sporting activities to participate in, including a 6.2km Race to the Base, 1800m Juniors Race and Charity Fun Run. This year there is an additional 3km race for those getting in to running, or for the youngsters who are up for a challenge.

There will also be some health and fitness stalls and a few activities to keep kids and families entertained during the events.

Cairns Cup Carnival

Hold on to your fascinators, this is one event you don’t want to miss.

Held over two unmissable Saturdays every year, the Red Beret Hotel Cairns Cup Carnival is a headline event of the Cairns social calendar and a major highlight for the local racing industry. With food, wine, fashion and world-class racing, the Cairns Cup is a must-do for the racing enthusiasts in the region.

There are ticket packages available for both race days. Whether you’re after a corporate, glamour or party experience, there’s a package to suit every group.

When: August 21 (Ladies Day) & August 28 (Cairns Cup), 2021

Expanded to an unmissable three day event, AusArmourfest is back this year with events to suit every armour and artillery enthusiast, featuring three days of historic vehicles driving on the Australian Armour and Artillery Museum grounds. Watch the parade of running World War II vehicles, catch a ride in a tank or get involved with live and online gaming activities.

When: August 27-29, 2021

Cairns Festival

Cairns Festival is an annual 10-day celebration of art, culture and the beauty of living in Tropical North Queensland. Since it’s inception in 1961, Cairns Festival continues to proudly showcase the breadth and depth of our local creatives, as well as brings world-class performers to the region.

This year’s Cairns Festival event promises to be a memorable night of remarkable Australian music, with an incredible lineup of world-class acts including Australian singer/songwriter Missy Higgins.

When: August 27 – September 5, 2021

Red Bull Defiance

Red Bull Defiance courses have been designed to test athletes over two extremely challenging days, racing alongside some of the worlds best multi-sport and endurance athletes. This two day event involves multiple race disciplines, taking competitors through awe-inspiring terrain and scenery, from the wet tropics rainforest to Great Barrier Reef.

When: August 29-30, 2021
Where: Mission Beach
