In wake of Australia’s avocado oversupply it’s time to start smashing avos – literally. Avo great start to the day with these avocado toast dishes in Cairns.

Ah…the humble avocado toast. From every Instagram influencer’s feed to your ridiculously repetitive friend that seems to order avo toast every time you go for brunch, it seems like everyone has been swept up in its buttery green goodness.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a giant avocado pit, you’ll know that Australia is in avo overload. As a matter of fact, this year the countries avocado supply is up 26 percent on the previous year, which equates to 22 avocados for every Australian. Long story short– everyone needs to up the ante on their avocado consumption. Challenge accepted? Head to one of these spots in Cairns and go green with a serve of avocado toast.

Guyala

Guyala takes your avocado toast and gives it a sassy tropical glow-up, one so incredible that the dish was named a finalist for “Australia’s best avocado toast”. The bready babe features locally sourced bushfood, finger limes and zesty citrus pearls. Plus, you can pimp it out by adding some seared Queensland scallops. Hass, queen!

Two Blocks

Block out a brunch date with your besties and head to the hottest spot in Holloways (note – not the bikini-clad beach) Two Blocks Cafe. The menu here changes seasonally, but the classic avocado toast always makes a smashing appearance. It comes topped with BBQ corned salsa, marinated salsa, chipotle aioli and a poached egg and is pretty much the lovechild of the drooling and heart eyes emojis.

NOA

Legend has it that Noah smuggled an avocado tree on the ark… Jokes aside, NOA, in the bustling heart of trendy Edge Hill, serves up a few tasty variations of the classic avocado toast. The aptly named “avocado toast” is topped with roasted tomato aioli, pesto, basil, pickled onion, stewed peppers and poached eggs. Or if you’re after something a bit more boujee, the salmon hash combines smoked salmon, crushed avocado and broken hash brown in one mouth-wateringly tasty toast topper. Br-avo!

Nunu

Avocado and toast might be a match made in heaven, but when paired with the view at Nunu, you can literally hear a hallelujah chorus. The iconic Palm Cove restaurant serves up avocado toast with palm-fringed coral sea views and can be paired with a good cuppa, or something a little naughtier if you fancy. Think mimosa or a classic bloody mary.

Hopscotch

Run, or hop if you prefer, to Hopscotch in Earlville to sink your teeth into their creamy dreamy avocado toast. This baby is heaped with marinated heirloom tomatoes, garden herbs, feta cheese, basil pesto and lemon, with the option to add haloumi, smoked salmon, double smoked bacon or poached eggs. Or all of the above, if you really want to guac out!

The Chambers

Get smashed right in the city centre at The Chambers, a former 1920s bank that has earned a spot in Queensland’s top 50 restaurants. If avocado toast was art, The Chambers offers up something Monet-level, so don’t be surprised if the whole table wants to take a picture of your brunch. The colourful dish features beetroot, heirloom cherry tomatoes, goats cheese & ricotta curd, pomegranate & dukkah.

Chill at Portofino

The beachfront village of Palm Cove offers a few cracking options when it comes to avocado toast, but Chill at Portofino offers avocado toast and a whole lot more. The iconic Tree Hugger takes your average smashed avo and ups the ante by adding baby spinach, grilled mushrooms, toasted almonds, basil pesto and poached eggs.

Mama Coco

Transport yourself into a foodie fairytale at Mama Coco and tuck into their Happily Avo After. It doesn’t come with a Fairy God Mother, but with key ingredients of heirloom tomato, red onion, chilli, rocket, basil mousse and crumbed fetta to make the perfect potion, you don’t really need one!
