Adrenaline-fuelled adventures beyond the bike

So you’ve tackled Tropical North Queensland’s best mountain-biking trails and now you’re looking for your next adrenaline-inducing activity? From bungy jumping to jungle surfing, here’s some to try.

You’ve blasted down Kuranda, let it rip on the Bump Track and shredded the most hardcore trails of the Smithfield, Atherton Forest and Davies Creek mountain-bike parks. If you want to experience a real adrenaline surge on a mountain bike, Tropical North Queensland is the place to do it. But mountain biking is just one possibility in a region where thrillseeking comes naturally. If your legs are telling you to get off the bike but you’re not ready to let your heart rate drop, add these activities to your schedule.

Surf the jungle

Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours

Fly through the canopy of the world’s oldest living rainforest at speeds of more than 45km/h on a Jungle Surfing Canopy Tour. This zipline ride, located in the Daintree Rainforest at Cape Tribulation, takes in five tree platforms, the world’s first ‘Human Hamster Wheel’ (a cable lift system propelled by foot power) and a thrilling creek crossing.

Ride a jet boat

Bad Fishy Jet Boating

Experience spins, slides and speed – and plenty of laughs – on Bad Fishy’s Tropical Twist jet boat tour, a fast-paced 35-minute marine adventure that takes in the sights of beautiful Trinity Inlet in Cairns. A warning: you will get wet.

Play chicken with a croc

Cairns ZOOM & Wildlife Dome

If ziplining through the rainforest isn’t thrilling enough, the Cairns ZOOM & Wildlife Dome can throw in an extra element of danger – Goliath the crocodile. This wildlife park in the heart of Cairns incorporates an amazing rope climbing and zipline complex, and dangling over Goliath is part of the latter on its adventurous Hi-ZOOM tour.

Raft the Tully white water

White Water Rafting with Raging Thunder at Tully Gorge

Navigate the rapids of the beautiful Tully River in your own raft on a guided tour. The guides will show you the ropes and lead you every step of the way as the river twists through spectacular World Heritage rainforest scenery and the rapids get bigger and trickier.

Stretch the bungy

AJ Hackett Cairns is the only bungy tower in Australia

At AJ Hackett’s Cairns Bungy Tower, set in the rainforest at Smithfield, you can take your pick from the 16 different jump styles on offer, which include everything from a graceful Swan Dive all the way to riding a BMX bike off a roof. Or you can just soar to a height of 45m at speeds of up to 120km/h with a friend on the Giant Jungle Swing.

Taste the dirt

Blazing Saddles ATV Tour

Get down and dirty on a Blazing Saddles ATV Tour, where you can zoom along rainforest trails, scramble up hills, splash through water traps and enjoy expansive views of the region from the seat of your very own quad bike.

Swim with the whales

Tropical North Queensland has the only known aggregate in the world where you can swim with Dwarf Minke Whales

Take a Minke Whale Dive Expedition with Mike Ball Dive ExpeditionsDivers DenSpirit of Freedom or Pro Dive to swim right alongside these big, beautiful creatures of the ocean, one of the natural world’s truly remarkable experiences.

Make the big jump

Skydive Mission Beach

Ramp up the adrenaline to the max and experience an unforgettably breathtaking view of Tropical North Queensland’s twin jewels – its World Heritage rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef – with a tandem skydive at Cairns or Mission Beach.
