Golf Guide

Tropical North Queensland might be home to beautiful blue waters and luxury islands, but if you’re a golfer or even just someone who likes a bit of a holiday putt, it will be the greens that you remember.

TNQ has a raft of top-rated courses that have hosted many of the world’s best golfers including Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and Karrie Webb. Paradise Palms, just 20 minutes drive north of Cairns, is rated as one of the top 100 courses in Australia and is also one of the toughest. The championship course at Mirage Country Club in Port Douglas – designed by renowned golfer Peter Thomson and a favourite of US President Bill Clinton – is one of the world’s leading resort courses.

Of course you don’t have to be a professional to enjoy the rainforest-flanked fairways and coastal links with spectacular mountain backdrops. There are eight courses in easy reach of Cairns airport and they all cater for visitors. The resort-style courses have superb clubhouses, and non-golfing travelling companions will love the facilities such as swimming pools, day spas and restaurants. Just don’t be surprised if your game’s a little under par though, because if those views don’t distract you, it’s quite likely the wallabies grazing the fairways will.
